Family Life Education (FLE) is designed to
help educate adults, youth, and families in many different activities occurring
outside the classroom, all though these activities vary greatly from the
population and the setting, the goal of all FLE is the same, “to strengthen and
enrich individual and family well-being.” The field of FLE requires a four-year
degree with a certification through the National Council on Family Relations
(NCFR) with coursework relating to 10 substance areas FL educators work within,
usually within the Human Development, Psychology, sociology, and general Social
Science fields. FLE has been around for over 200 years with one of the central
ideas to help families to better society.
Individuals within the FLE field work with individuals and families to
provide prevention strategies through education; this is the main difference
between FLE and therapy fields. FLE is not is focused on providing people with
therapy, but rather educate individuals and families in ways to allow them to
become productive members of society by providing them with education and
resources based on theory and research.
